Back in January, a friend of mine reminded our social media community of the concept of a word for the year, and I decided to choose “bloom.”
To bloom is to come to life after sleeping, hibernating, resting. Blooming is the culmination of growth, the flowering a powerful display of the plant’s beauty and power. It felt right to me to imagine coming to life again after a tough period in my life.
So, as I had the previous year, I wrote a poem using my chosen word:
Bloom
Someone planted you in the dirt, darling
You’ve languished here
Imagining your way out
Stretching, seeking the light
Dreaming of the days your petals would float gently in the breeze
Envisioning your smiling face turning towards the sun
The time is coming, sweetheart
The days when you find your way through the mire and fetid matter
Reach your green tendrils to the cool air
Soak in the soft rain
Grow into your next form
Remember, beautiful: a seed contains everything it needs to blossom, and it always has.
The poem really began with the last line: a seed contains everything it needs to blossom, and it always has. It came to me as I was walking my dog, and the rest kind of flowed through me when I sat down to write.
In the depths of winter, when the plants are buried deep and spring feels very far away, it can be hard to remember that you contain what you need. Trust yourself, and watch the buds form. Listen to yourself, and watch the petals emerge.
Spring is coming.
